Dispute resolution mechanisms

The national energy laws and rules set out roles and processes for resolving disputes in network access issues and for disputes in relation to the operation of the wholesale energy market.

The AER does not resolve disputes between energy customers and their retailer or distributor.

However, we receive reports on customer complaints and disputes from energy businesses and Ombudsman schemes. We use this information to monitor compliance with the rules.

Regulatory Investment Test disputes and Electricity access disputes

The AER is the dispute resolution body for disputes of the Regulatory Investment Test and access disputes between access seekers and electricity distributors for negotiated distribution services.

Gas pipeline access disputes

The AER is the dispute resolution body for access disputes relating to scheme pipelines under Chapter 5 of the National Gas Law.

Wholesale market disputes

Disputes in wholesale energy markets are dealt with by the Wholesale Energy Market Dispute Resolution Advisor.
