About our project

Electricity network service providers (NSPs) are regulated natural monopolies, but the shift to a more decentralised and digital energy system is testing the assumptions underpinning the current framework. These NSPs are increasingly acting as platforms, which is blurring the line between monopoly and contestable services and making regulation more complex.

Through our Future of network regulation project, the AER is considering how the framework may need to evolve to remain fit for purpose and support long-term consumer outcomes. This work is intended to support clearer policy, better decisions and more effective engagement in external reform processes.

Information Paper - June 2026

Our paper looks at how the AER regulates electricity networks today and how the framework may need to evolve in response to a changing energy system.
