Powerdirect - application to surrender electricity retailer authorisation - request for submissions

On 8 July 2022, the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) accepted an application from Powerdirect to surrender its electricity retailer authorisation. Powerdirect was acquired by AGL Energy Limited on 19 February 2007 and it is intended that customers will be transferred to AGL.

The AER may decide to approve the surrender if the AER is satisfied that arrangements relating to the surrender will appropriately manage the transfer of any retail customers. Under section 105 of the National Energy Retail Regulations, the AER may also place conditions on the transfer of customers (in consultation with AEMO).

Invitation for submissions

We are now seeking submissions from interested stakeholders on Powerdirect's surrender application by Friday 5 August 2022. Submissions should be emailed to AERAuthorisations@aer.gov.au with the email subject: Powerdirect - application to surrender retailer authorisations, and for the attention of: Rowena Park, General Manager, Compliance and Enforcement Branch.

Alternatively, written submissions can also be sent to:

Rowena Park
General Manager Compliance and Enforcement Branch
Australian Energy Regulator
GPO Box 3131

We will take into account submissions in deciding whether or not to grant Powerdirect's application.

The AER prefers that all submissions be sent in an electronic format in Microsoft Word or other text readable document form and publicly available, to facilitate an informed, transparent and robust consultation process. Accordingly, submissions will be treated as public documents and posted on the AER's website, unless prior arrangements are made with the AER to treat the submission, or portions of it, as confidential. Those wishing to submit confidential information are requested to:

  • clearly identify the information that is the subject of the confidentiality claim; and
  • provide a non-confidential version of the submission.
