The AER regulates in an external environment that is undergoing rapid change and is increasingly complex. The energy system is experiencing a significant transition with rapid innovation in new technology, as well as changes in community and consumer expectations and consumer engagement.

As the energy sector changes, it is important to us to to adjust accordingly; the following initiatives are examples of us doing that.

Better Resets Handbook

The Handbook proposes a new approach to revenue determinations for network businesses in the key areas of tariffs, forecast expenditure and depreciation while placing emphasis on consumer engagement.


Game Changer

The objective of Game Changer is to develop sector-wide reforms that support consumers experiencing vulnerability.


National Energy Objectives

The AER is producing and consulting on guidance on the implementation of the amended National Energy Objectives. The AER will conduct work throughout 2023 and 2024 to update relevant Guidelines.


Regulatory Sandboxing – Energy Innovation Toolkit

The Energy Innovation Toolkit supports energy innovators and start-ups navigate complex regulatory frameworks, and trial new products and services that will deliver greater choice and cheaper energy options for consumers.
