On 3 October 2025, the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) approved Ampol Energy (Retail) Pty Ltd's (Ampol) application to surrender its electricity retailer authorisation and gas retailer authorisation

The AER may decide to approve the surrender of a retailer authorisation if it is satisfied that arrangements to appropriately manage the transfer of customers are in place. The AER can also, in consultation with the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), place conditions on the transfer of customers.

We have placed several conditions on Ampol’s electricity retailer authorisation surrender to ensure impacted customers are protected through the transfer. These conditions include a requirement for Ampol to ensure customers are provided with information about Energy Made Easy, a free and independent energy price comparison website.

We have introduced further conditions for consumers experiencing vulnerability, such as customers on payment plans or participating in Ampol’s Hardship Program to ensure that these consumers do not experience unnecessary detriment as a result of the transfer.

We have decided not to impose conditions on Ampol’s gas retailer authorisation surrender, as Ampol does not have any gas retail customers.

Ampol’s customers are not required to take any immediate action.

The surrenders will take effect on 2 April 2026. Until then Ampol is still an authorised retailer and must continue to satisfy its retailer obligations, including maintaining its ombudsman membership and continuing to comply with its obligations relating to notifying customers of their dispute resolution rights.

Once transferred, customers are under no obligation to remain with their transferred retailer. We encourage all consumers to shop around using the Energy Made Easy service to find the energy deal that is right for them.
