Today we commenced public consultation on a contingent project application from Transgrid for the System Security Roadmap Operational Technology project.

A contingent project application outlines the amount of revenue a business seeks to recover from its customers to deliver a project. Transgrid submitted its contingent project application on 1 May 2026.

As part of its application, Transgrid is proposing $163.5 million (nominal) of capital expenditure to deliver the project. This includes costs for upgrades to operational technology in Transgrid’s control rooms and corporate offices to improve its reactive and proactive capabilities to plan for, and respond to, operational issues leading to improved system security. Transgrid expects the project to increase average household bills in NSW by $0.30 in the 2027-28 financial year.

Funding for a contingent project is permitted under clause 6A.8.2 of the National Electricity Rules through an adjustment to the maximum allowed revenue under TransGrid’s 2023-28 revenue determination.

Our role is to review the prudency and efficiency of the proposed costs within the application to ensure consumers pay no more than necessary. We have 40 business days from receiving the application or responses to information requests to make our decision.
