The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) has today announced the appointment of Matt Garbutt as Chief Executive Officer of the AER.
Mr Garbutt has been Acting CEO since 1 August 2025, after joining the AER as the Executive General Manager AER Compliance, Enforcement & Surveillance in February 2024.
Prior to joining the AER, Matt was the Executive Director, Energy Sector Reform Division for the Victorian Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action where he was responsible for Victoria’s energy consumer policy, transmission and distribution network policy and wholesale market policy in the gas and electricity markets, and their associated compliance and enforcement frameworks.

Mr Garbutt commences as Chief Executive Officer effective immediately.
