AER Energy update
Release date

On 26 March 2026, the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) published a draft determination proposing to introduce an exemption framework for meter testing, and to amend existing obligations with respect to malfunctions  to support Metering Coordinators' (MCs) compliance with their testing, inspecting and repair obligations under the National Electricity Rules. The AER made a submission in response to the draft determination on 7 May 2026.

Our submission supports the draft rule as a balanced and practical response to the challenges faced by MCs, and may improve metering accuracy, support more efficient meter maintenance arrangements, and reduce unaccounted for energy. We also make recommendations to the AEMC around the clarification of certain terms and obligations.
