Network performance report
Release date

This is our first combined annual Electricity and gas network performance report. This report replaces the previous separate electricity performance reports (published since 2020) and gas network performance reports (published since 2021).

Our network performance reports aim to be accessible information resources that enhance transparency and accountability around how network service providers are performing within regulatory frameworks, thereby encouraging improved performance.

The report sets out our analysis of key outcomes and trends in the operational and financial performance data we collect from regulated electricity and gas networks. Our analysis is focused on the provision of core regulated services. These are:

  • Standard Control Services for electricity distribution networks,
  • Prescribed Transmission Services for electricity transmission networks, and
  • Haulage Reference Services for gas networks.

Analysing network performance against forecasts and benchmarks helps us and others to understand the effectiveness of the regulatory regime; thereby supporting informed engagement, data-driven debate, and continuous improvement. Our report also includes explanatory notes that detail our calculation and interpretation of the financial performance measures.

Along with the report we have published the following material that supports our analysis.

  • Infographics - summarising key information from the operational and financial performance datasets.
  • Financial performance datasets - sets out our calculation and analysis of the profitability measures. There are separate datasets for electricity and gas networks, covering 2014 to 2022 and an illustrative model that uses proxy data to show how we calculate the return on regulated equity.
  • The operational performance datasets - sets out key operational performance metrics. There are separate datasets for electricity networks and gas networks. These are a continuation of our performance data publications that began in 2018 and cover regulatory years 2006 to 2023.

The accompanying datasets published alongside this report are provided in Microsoft Excel workbooks. We plan to replace some of these workbooks with Power BI dashboards when we complete further upgrades to our website.

Separately we will report on 3 scheme (transmission) pipelines - Amadeus Gas Pipeline, Roma Brisbane Pipeline and Victorian Transmission System - which operate on a different reporting schedule. We plan to report on these gas transmission networks in the second half of 2024.
