SA Power Networks was granted a waiver under provision 4.2 of the Ring-fencing Guideline (Electricity distribution) to conduct Market Active Solar trial partnering with ARENA, AGL and Simply Energy (now identified as Engie). This waiver enabled SA Power Networks to trial an innovative operational model of sending a retailer signal with their flexible export limits communication signal to a customer's inverter. The combined communication signal allows customers to earn rewards by curtailment of their solar exports during negative price events.
The trial was proposed for a 12-month period commencing on 1 July 2024 and ending on 31 December 2025. On 7 November 2025, SA Power Networks applied to the AER for an interim waiver to allow them to continue serving Market Active Solar customers until they consider next steps based on the findings of the trial. The AER has granted the interim waiver valid from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2026, with the scope of interim waiver to be limited to 100 Engie customers and with conditions that provide transparency on total costs, registered customers, hosting capacity allocations and customer consent arrangements.
