Current Guidelines and Instruments
Good system planning is critical to ensuring Australia's electricity grid is capable of delivering reliable power at the most efficient cost.
The National Electricity Rules (NER) set out what's required in system planning and our role is to provide the guidelines and instruments to make sure everyone applies the rules correctly and follows the same processes.
The instruments tell the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) and network service providers what they must do when undertaking system planning and investment. The guidelines expand on those requirements and provide examples that help to address the instruments.
An important part of the Regulatory Investment Test (RIT) process is understanding the thresholds that apply to a proponent's works. These thresholds are explained in the RIT guidelines. We review the thresholds at least every 3 years to ensure they remain appropriate. We may also review the system planning instruments and guidelines as necessary.
